Dr. Thomas Schmittgen

Tom Schmittgen is a professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He holds both undergraduate (Pharmacy) and graduate degrees (Pharmaceutics) from the Ohio State University. He was a National Research Service Award (NIH) postdoctoral fellow at the University of Southern California from 1992-1995. He then served on the faculty at Washington State University College of Pharmacy before returning to Ohio State in 2002. Dr. Schmittgen’s research utilizes the principles of pharmaceutics, pharmacology, molecular biology and biotechnology to perform basic and translational research on a number of cancer-related topics. A paper Dr. Schmittgen co-authored in 2001 describing the relative method of gene quantification has been cited over 36,000 times and was recently ranked by Nature as the 21st most cited scientific article of all time (http://www.nature.com/news/the-top-100-papers-1.16224). Dr. Schmittgen’s lab was the first to establish a link between altered microRNA expression in pancreatic cancer (Link to PDF Article) and the intellectual property resulting from this work is currently under development as a biomarker for pancreatic cancer detection.
